The "Spiritual Christian" and the "Carnal Christian"

Good Morning Everyone

I have been away for awhile but am back now. Hope you will visit us regularily and if you desire to be on my blog list (Dee's Thoughts) just email me at and i will put you on it. This morning we will be discussing the difference between a Spiritual Christian and a Carnal Christian. Perhaps you have never given this any thought before but it is important to see how we are doing in our walk with God. For some of us, perhaps, we have walked with the Lord for many years, where as, for others perhaps we are just getting started in our walk with God. Either way, let's do some exploring together.

The difference between the two:

A Spiritual Christian

The Spiritual Christian “The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment…” (1 Corinthians 2:15).

The spiritual person has accepted Christ and lives a Christ-centered life. He is not sinless and he faces problems and temptations every day, just like everyone else. But he chooses as a way of life, to trust Christ with every circumstance and problem that comes along. His greatest desire is to please Christ, and he doesn’t rely on the approval of others.

A Carnal Christian

“Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly – mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).

Carnal means “fleshly.” The carnal Christian is a Christian (who has committed his life to Jesus Christ at some point), but his life is oriented around himself and his needs. He may show evidence of being a Christian at times, but the work of the Holy Spirit is suppressed either through conscious disobedience or ignorance.

What distinguishes the carnal Christian from the spiritual Christian?

It isn’t that the carnal Christian lacks part of Christ or the Holy Spirit – he possesses the same spiritual resources as the spiritual Christian. But the spiritual man relies on Christ’s power to live his Christian life while the carnal man relies on his own power. Trying to live the Christian life on our own efforts is as futile as trying to get around town by pushing your car.

It is impossible to live the Christian Life! Why? Because it is only through Christ that we have what we need to live life at all, let alone a spiritual one... that is impossible! Letting go of living life our way is the key to living life God's way. that is the pathway we must all take. Letting go of our human strength to try and do it in our own strength, relying and trusting in God to give us what we need to get through every problem and circumstance.

Whatever need you have today tell God about it and give it to him. He will work it out on your behalf as you trust in Him.

Blessings, Dee
