We all have experienced difficult times in life that are very hard to face and walk through. We somehow seem to get through them but with each heartache there seems to be a piece of us that gets broken off and life is not the same ever again. It is not the same its just different. We are not the same, we are forever changed. Seems like there is a lot of heartache going on around us these days, the loss of friends, family, sicknesses of all types, etc. This is life right?
In the midst of all of this, we struggle with the challenges of our own individual lives: lab reports return with news we were not expecting; layoff rumors; or a loved one is gone.
Tragedy makes way to shock and You become desensitized. Nothing is left in your emotional reservoir. You can't differentiate between emotions. Compassion merges with anger and is swallowed in unbelief and dispersed in an unutterable prayer. Many just want to walk away.
So, to whom do we turn to....let's look at Psalm 61:
Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. For you have heard my vows, O God; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. Psalm 61:1-5
In the face of tragedy we must do 3 things:
2. Plead.. I cry unto Thee, 'My heart is overwhelmed.'" Honestly plead your case before The Lord.
3. Praise.. The psalmist characteristically moves from being overwhelmed and making his plea to ending with worship. This is, no doubt, where we all need to get to. Yet this may be the missing step in our heart. We can't stay in pleading. You must move from pleading to releasing at the foot of the Cross.
The numbness will go away, giving way to grief, but not in hopelessness, but as one who has hope. Jesus is our hope and He will not fail us in our time of need. He is our rock and our anchor when the storms rage and life is difficult to understand. Know this....we do not walk through this life alone, we have the promise of Jesus who walks with us and has prepared a place for us when we get to heaven. Trust Him, we will not be disappointed.
