Well, the Holidays are now behind us and a new year awaits us. I pray that your 2015 will be life-changing for you and your family in a positive way. For our topic this morning, how many of us have heard others say, "this is the way I am and I will never change"! Perhaps we ourselves have said these very words at one time or another. Let's look a little deeper into the words...
Do you believe the life you live is yours alone, and has no affect on anyone else? Let's look at a couple of Scriptures..
Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine .The soul who sins will die. Ezekiel 18:4 NASB
For if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. Romans 14:8
We do not live just for ourselves, even though we may think we are, someone is always watching. Everything we say and do is watched by others even though we may not know it. Others are always watching our actions, listening to our words, wondering how we are going to deal with a situation. We cannot escape it, what we do and what we say carries weight. It will have an effect on our families, friends and yes even strangers.
We can choose to live for ourselves or we can choose to live for God.
Why is it better to live life within the will of God?
Because God has our best interests at heart and He knows what is best for us. I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps. Jeremiah 10:23
God has given us the right to make our own choices: Not only can we choose, but we must be pro-active in our choosing.
choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
My right to do what I want must be submitted to a higher authority.
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Romans 13:1-2
Having rights comes with responsibility:
Do not repay evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “it is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. Romans 12:17-19
Knowing I am not in charge (meaning the only power I have is what God gives me), is a relief. The pressure is off of me (us) to make sure everything is right. It is peace!
In Conclusion: We do not need to defend “who we are” when we know who we are. God knows who we are! We only react defensively to those things we are not sure of!
This is what your Sovereign Lord says, your God who defends his
People: “See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you
Stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink
Again. I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you,
‘Fall prostrate that we may walk over you.’ and you made your back
like the ground, like a street to be walked over".
