This morning we are going to discuss "the voices we hear". For all of us there is a lot of voices that we hear going through our minds everyday. the key is how do we recognize who's voice is who and who am i responding to when hearing it? Am I listening to...Mine; Satan's; or God's? It is important to be able to tell whose voice i am hearing. How do we recognize the voice of God from all the other voices? How do we know when God is speaking to us? Revelation 3:20 says; Here am! I stand at the door and knock. if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. According to this Scripture it says, 'if anyone hears my voice' which indicate's that when His voice comes to us we will know it.
We can be tricked sometimes into thinking that God would not ask certain things of us, but God does ask us to do some pretty unusual and difficult things at times and it is in those times that the voice of the enemy comes and tries to lead us away from God. How do you know when a prompting is from God and when it’s Satan whispering lies?
It is very important to recognize that Satan does come whispering. Scripture makes it clear that Satan has at least some capacity to influence our inner conversation. Acts 5:3 points to this. Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.
These “whispers” of the enemy can be very subtle in the way they come to us. He can even present himself as a godly presence disguising his lies as the voice of truth. So, as various thoughts flow through our minds is it possible to distinguish the voice of the enemy from the voice of the Holy Spirit? What are the marks of those two very different voices? Learning to sort out the voice of the enemy from the voice of the Spirit is critical to every believer’s spiritual well- being.
When Satan speaks into our thoughts he has only one purpose: to do harm! When you feel defeated or hopeless, that’s a good sign that Satan is at work within your mind and heart. When it feels right to nurse your wounds and stay angry you can be sure that you are being lied to. The voice of our enemy comes with messages like these: God doesn’t care; No one cares about you; Give up; Run away; Your a failure; It's too late to fix it. He nurses our pain and whispers that we should stay away from God.
God does exactly the opposite. He does not minimize or dismiss our sin but He reminds us that our sin is covered. If we confess and repent we can be free.
The voice of God shows us a way out and gives us the strength to do the hard work of making amends. God always gives us a way out. He never leaves us in a state of hopelessness. Thank you Lord for your faithfulness even when I am not faithful.
